they tickle you with tinsel
roll you in pretty paper
and set you on fire

they place you on the lips
of dream makers
housewives and presidents

pulled in you become oxygen
you slip out smoke and mirror smiling
drifting, scratching

life's a french inhaled curlicue
and it's sweet for a time
before they put you to sleep

a thousand years stretched out
like a cat in the bed of an H
happy birthday to you all

good night

  4. This just drenches you in the emptiness of a life that's all glitter. A sad life, I'd say. Nicely done.

  6. ...then set you on fire...

Wow. Great imagery. Powerful and terribly unfair to the beauty in question.

  11. a succinct and powerful message in this.

  12. You've laid it out in detail, Rene, that "push, pull, pinch just a little more" sense of entitlement that fans develop toward and about their idols. Nicely put together.

  13. One of my favourites among these Magpies! The images of the 3rd stanza especially seized me. I like how you are looking at the gazers and not only the gazed-at.

  19. This is powerful, Rene. My favourite so far, anyhow. I also hadn't heard the word curlicue for years.....so it was nice to even just read that!

i don't like eggs but you knew this already i know you're thinking such a terrible waste but it's not, you see i'm feeding them to the dog she loves them just as much as i know she loved you and the way you walked her as if every single thing she sniffed mattered to you as well sorry, dear pardon my red wine opera crowd violin string tugging (your words) i ramble at breakfast like a fussy percolator but you knew this already morning is when i am most honest and vulnerable i know that's why you left after dinner oh god dammit you i miss you so much what i did before us is a mystery and what i do now is insanity i'm frying up eggs just to smell them again and to perhaps coax you down, from wherever you are for breakfast did you know i believe that there is still a ghost of a chance Rene Foran ~  April 2011 photo by Tess Kincaid for Magpie Tales click for more info
