they tickle you with tinsel
roll you in pretty paper
and set you on fire
they place you on the lips
of dream makers
housewives and presidents
pulled in you become oxygen
you slip out smoke and mirror smiling
drifting, scratching
life's a french inhaled curlicue
and it's sweet for a time
before they put you to sleep
a thousand years stretched out
like a cat in the bed of an H
happy birthday to you all
Hollywood
and
good night
Rene ~ December 2011
Happy New Year
now that there's a brilliant line, "stretched out like a cat in the bed of the H." wow.
ReplyDeletePowerful. Love that first stanza in particular.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Rene. Here's to great things in the next 365 :)
nice inclusion of the happy birthday memory there...the first stanza goes off like a firework and sets the tone for this well rene...happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteThis just drenches you in the emptiness of a life that's all glitter. A sad life, I'd say. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteWowzers, some killer lines in here. Looking forward to reading more in 2012.
ReplyDeleteThat´s beautiful - and sad.
ReplyDelete...then set you on fire...
ReplyDeleteWow. Great imagery. Powerful and terribly unfair to the beauty in question.
Brilliant!
ReplyDelete:)
Captures well the bitter-sweetness of her ife
ReplyDeleteYes good old Hollywood can make or break many.. unfortunately, a beauty was broken..
ReplyDeletemuch enjoyed
Rather beautifully-written ode to Norma J.
ReplyDeleteLovely, Rene.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Pearl
a succinct and powerful message in this.
ReplyDeletePowerful and poignant. A fine read!
ReplyDeleteYou've laid it out in detail, Rene, that "push, pull, pinch just a little more" sense of entitlement that fans develop toward and about their idols. Nicely put together.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourites among these Magpies! The images of the 3rd stanza especially seized me. I like how you are looking at the gazers and not only the gazed-at.
ReplyDeleteOh I liked the lines...
ReplyDelete'They place you on the lips
Of dream makers..'
How true. I enjoyed reading this one.
Thanks for Sharing. Wish you have a happy new year. May you have peace, love and prosperity.

the thumbnail pic got my attention on some other blogroll but the words were even better. Right up there with "Candle in the Wind".
ReplyDeleteHey did you know about the statue in Chicago of her?

This is powerful, Rene. My favourite so far, anyhow. I also hadn't heard the word curlicue for years.....so it was nice to even just read that!
ReplyDeleteA Happy New Year to you and your family!
